How to Drive Traffic to Your Instagram Accounts and Direct Messaging Campaigns.

In case you don’t already know, simply creating an Instagram account does not guarantee you automatic traffic. Getting authentic followers, in other words ones that will interact and engage with your content, is hard work—but it is possible and will benefit your brand in the long run. 

According to Sprout Social roughly 48 million Instagram users are fake. Although it may be tempting to pay for followers to amass a large following in a short time, in the end these people are just a number. They don’t care about your product or service and because of this won’t serve any value to your bottom line. Instagram has also begun fighting back against accounts with fake followers, by limiting features and visibility to users trying to take the easy way out. You’re much better off to have a smaller, more engaged audience, than a large audience that doesn’t interact with your posts at all. 

In this article, we will outline tried and tested techniques that will assist you in getting authentic traffic to your Instagram accounts and direct messaging campaigns. 

Paid Traffic

Facebook and Instagram have released the ability to set up an ad within your Ad Manager allowing you to direct people to opt into your messaging campaigns. This functionality is extremely powerful because it gives you the ability to build relationships through conversation, the first step to increasing sales and followers. Although many people think that an influencer has to have a large following in order to drive your bottom line and increase engagement, there are actually multiple types of influencers that you could employ depending on your budget and needs. These include: 

  • Mega-Influencers-Have more than 1 million followers on at least one social platform. These people are often celebrities offline as well, but can also be people who have gained a massive following online as well. 
  • Macro-Influencers-Have between 40,000 and 1 million followers. These people are often on the brink of celebrity or online experts.
  • Micro-Influencers-Have between 1000 and 40,000 followers. These people have often built up their following in a specific niche with which they have influence.
  • Nano-Influencers-Have fewer than 1000 followers, but tend to carry influence in a specialized or uncommon area.

Driving traffic to your account or direct messaging campaign organically, means that you are posting content on your Instagram without any paid media behind it. The key to succeeding organically is to create quality content on topics that your audience is searching for on a regular basis. Although it might be tempting to just throw a bunch of posts up without much thought and hope for the best, it’s important that you take time to think through the type of content that you post and measure its success with analytics. CEO of VaynerMedia, Gary Vaynerchuk said it perfectly when he stated that, “no amount of paid media is going to turn bad creative into good content.” By taking the time to produce content that actually resonates and provides value for your audience, in a variety of formats (photos, videos, shopping posts, carousels, etc.) you will not only be able to increase your traffic, but also keep your audience engaged and informed. Along with having good content, using hashtags effectively can also help you to spread the word and increase engagement. In order to determine what hashtags would be best for your brand, it’s important that you perform hashtag research. Here are some of the best ways to find hashtags for your account:

  • Your Audience- What hashtags is your audience using that are relevant to your brand?
  • Your Competitors- What hashtags are your competitors using that might be valuable for your niche?
  • Influencers- What hashtags are influencers in your field using?
  • Instagram Search Bar- Type a hashtag related to your niche in the search bar and select ‘tags’. This will provide you with hashtags that are closely related to the one you searched for. 

Omnichannel 

It’s probably extremely likely that you are on other social media platforms besides Instagram such as YouTube, Tik Tok, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, etc.). Why not use these accounts to spread the word about your Instagram accounts and direct messaging campaigns?
